Application for a Welfare Assistance Grant

A daily living expenses grant is to help you with food and utilities for a week. To qualify for this, you must live in the County Durham area and your circumstances must have changed unexpectedly. No cash will be given. If successful you will be given vouchers to buy food and utilities with, you may also get help with hygiene and baby products. You will need a valid mobile phone number and email address to be able to receive the codes/ vouchers.

A settlement grant is to help you move into your own accommodation after living in supported/unsettled accommodation/homeless or to help you remain in your own home rather than move into residential care. You must be working with a support organisation to qualify for this grant and they must submit a supporting statement to confirm this. No cash will be given. If you are successful you may receive brand new white goods/bed, secondhand furniture or Argos vouchers for smaller items. You will need a valid mobile phone number and email address to be able to receive the goods/vouchers.

There will be an opportunity at the end of the application to upload all supporting evidence.

The Council has a limited amount of money that can be used to help residents in receipt of Universal Credit whose housing costs are not being met in full.

The scheme is not part of the benefits legislation. All awards are made at the Council's discretion. To be eligible you will need to show that your circumstances are exceptional.

Awards are normally for a period of between 2 to 6 months and cannot be relied upon to solve long term shortfalls in benefit.
